Overview

Our two weeks together in the summer are a lively mix of creating digital stories, exploring the creations of others, reflecting on our practices of instructional design, brainstorming ideas for how we can apply digital storytelling in our classrooms, and presenting proposals for units we could implement in the upcoming school year.

Timetable (subject to change)

  • Day 1

    • Meet fellow participants
    • Listen to an overview and expectations about program
    • Receive an introduction to the Alliance Wiki
    • Learn about foundational research and insight on story elements, storytelling in general, and digital storytelling in particular.
    • Unwrap and get to know your camcorder and other tools
    • Learn some shooting fundamentals
    • Tell (and film) a brief story that captures something about the last school year
  • Day 2

    • Learn about what makes a compelling story
    • Take a tour of PCDS for scene possibilities
    • Learn about shot types
    • Learn about storytelling essentials
    • Examine digital storytelling planning tools
    • Begin production of the Ideal School promotional video
    • Receive an introduction to editing
  • Day 3

    • Learn more about editing
    • Explore video production resources
    • Continue Ideal School production
  • Day 4

    • Continue and finish Ideal School production
    • View Ideal School videos
    • Discuss participants' use of the Alliance wiki
    • Plan and produce a digital poem
    • View digital poems
  • Day 5 (half-day)

    • Plan and produce video on how to accomplish a task. (“How To” video)
    • Receive an overview of Alliance projects and expectations for the coming week and year
    • Evaluate first week
  • Day 6 (Monday)

    • View “How to” videos
    • TBD -or- Discuss instructional design and reflect on your approach
    • Differentiate between the many uses of video in the classroom
    • Explore examples of digital storytelling in education
  • Day 7

    • Begin projects: explore, decide, research, produce
  • Day 8

  • Day 9

    • Put finishing touches on projects and practice presentations
    • Present project proposals
    • Give feedback to others
    • Determine workshop dates
    • Discuss the first workshop
    • Evaluate the summer institute
    • Pack up and have a great summer!
